Academic Background

I studied physics at the Australian National University, graduating with an honours degree in 2007. In my final year I worked on sympathetic cooling of 85Rb atoms. During my PhD under Dr. Nick Robins, I investigated Bose-Einstein condensates with tunable interactions as well as the role of interactions in atom interferometry. After graduating in 2012 I worked for six months building a high-precision gravimeter using Bragg diffraction of cold atoms. I recently moved to Munich where I now work with a team led by Dr. Tatjana Wilk studying single atoms interacting with a high-finesse cavity in the strong-coupling regime.

Description of Work

In this project, I will study electromagnetically induced transparency of a single atom strongly coupled to a high-finesse cavity. Applying a control laser to the atom should modify its susceptibility to the extent that a probe beam normally reflected from the cavity will be entirely transmitted. Achieving strong coupling between the atom and the optical mode is crucial to observing this effect. The normal threelevel EIT scheme will also be extended to a four-level N-type scheme which will provide additional control over the cavity-EIT effect and permit strong coupling of two optical modes. The control field can then be reduced to the level of a single quantum, realising a single-photon transistor.
